Captain:  Roz Bartlett

Playing for the County couldn't be easier.

If you are over 50 - you can play.  Our friendly matches are open to all handicaps.  If you are interested in either scratch or friendly matches drop me a email.  We  have six matches a year played against neighbouring East Region Counties. Match days are really good value at just £15 per match and the County supports the cost of these matches.  We also  welcome all willing volunteers.

The Eastern Region Seniors County Scratch League is now in its 2nd year.  We play 4 county scratch matches against teams from Essex, Norfolk, Hertfordshire and Suffolk.  The format is 6 single scratch matches.  If you are under a 10 handicap then you are eligiable to play.

Seniors County Match Roundup

It has certainly been a season full of will it or won’t it’s. The weather has been a determining factor and has tried very hard to bring our season to a full stop.

We opened the season with an away scratch match against the mighty Hertfordshire  at East Herts Golf Club. All the matches were very tight with 2 of the 4 losses going to the 18th hole. Herts won 4 & 2.

On Monday 20th May, we took on Northamptonshire in a friendly match at Northampton Golf Club. I was unfortunately very poorly, going down with Covid and so did not see the lovely, but very challenging course.

Our ladies fought valiantly but the Northamptonshire ladies with their prior knowledge of the course took the match 3 and 1.

On the 11th July, Essex joined our scratch team ladies for battle at Brampton Park Golf Club. It is fair to say our ladies put on a great show, winning 2 matches, halving 2 matches and losing 2 matches. A properly halved match.

Due to the sad death of Bedfordshire President Kim Burnage our friendly match against Bedfordshire has been postponed. We will meet them again next year.

Our last friendly of the year was with Norfolk Vets. Originally scheduled for the 4th May, this match finally took place on the 4th October at Kings Lynn Golf Club.

Norfolk Vets are extremely competitive and put up their very best players. Our ladies fought very hard but we lost 3 & 1.

The 14th October saw our ladies take on Suffolk at the mighty Gog MaGog Golf Club.

Suffolk were no match for the determination of our ladies and we succeeded in a very good 31/2 – 21/2 win. Yipee, well done ladies.

And so to our final match. The weather prevented us from playing on the 30th September, raining so hard we thought we might not get to play for weeks. However, Nicki Wylie has good contacts at Royal Norwich and our match took places on the 22nd October. For once the weather was utterly lovely. Sadly, the opposition was just too tough for us. Norfolk Seniors not only put out a +1 player but all their other players were very, very low handicaps. Our ladies did not go down without a fight and did their very best. Hopefully enjoying the very lovely course made the 6-0 loss more palatable.

And then the season was over. I am standing down as Seniors Captain after 4 fab years. I have not only learnt a great deal about county golf but have met some great ladies along the way.

So many ladies have put themselves up for County golf and to those ladies I say a huge thank you. Your support has been brilliant and we have gone from being a small county, enjoying the friendly matches to a team that can hold their own and give those other teams a run for their money.

Although I am very sad to be leaving the group I hope to see them in my new role as President, I shall certainly keep an eye on their progress under their new captain, Cath Emery. I wish them all the very best.
